DROPS DEAD Lt AT TELEPHONE
+
Bayonne Exempt Fireman
+
Dies After Answering
+
Daughter's Call.
+
While he still held the receiver of
+
the telephone in his hand after prom-
+
ising his daughter he would leave
+
the pool game immediately and go
+
up for his supper, Richard Burke,
+
60, of 943 Avenue C, Bayonne, an
+
exempt fireman, collapsed in the
+
booth and expired before the arrival
+
of the physician who was summoned
+
to his assistance. Dr. Harold Loksa,
+
who responded to the call for the
+
ambulance, pronounced Burke dead
+
upon examination. Death was said
+
to be due to a heart attack.
+
 Burke, former Freeholder William
+
F. Hogan, Frank Toby and Silvie Os-
+
borne, all members, were enjoying a
+
game of pool in the headquarters of
+
the Exempt Firemen's Association on
+
47th St., near Broadway, when the
+
telephone bell sounded and the re-
+
quest was made that Burke come to
+
the phone. Burke • had just broken
+
the pyramid of balls, but he ex-
+
cused himself and answered the call.
+
It was from his daughter, Mrs.
+
Estelle Irwin, with whom he makes
+
his home, and she reminded him that
+
it was 5:45 p. m., time for him to go
+
after his supper.
+
 "All right, dear," Burke responded.
+
this is our last game and I'll be up
+
before you have the table set"
+
Burke started to hang up the re-
+
ceiver and his companions noticed he
+
seemed to have difficulty in doing so.
+
As they watched,. they' saw Burke
+
bring both hands to his heart and
+
fall to the floor.
+
Hogan and Osborne went to his
+
assistance, while Toby immediately
+
notified Lieut. Patrick J. Donovan at
+
police headquarters. The latter noti-
+
fied the hospital and Dr. Loksa. was
+
on the scene in a few minutes. He
+
was too late. however, for when he
+
arrived, Burke had already expired.
